The basic certificate wording formula

Almost every certificate, from a church ordination to an employee award, uses the same five parts:

Put together

Certificate of Appreciation · This certificate is presented to [Full Name] in recognition of [specific reason] · [Organization], [Date]

The reason line is where most certificates fall flat. "For your hard work" is forgettable; "for organizing every Saturday food drive this year" is something the recipient will keep.

Certificate of appreciation

Tips that work for every certificate

  • Be specific. Name the project, the season or the result. Specific wording is what makes a certificate worth framing.
  • Keep the reason to one or two sentences. Save the longer story for the presentation speech.
  • Use full names, spelled the way the person spells them, and check them with someone who knows.
  • Match the tone to the occasion. Formal and traditional for ordinations and long service; warm and playful for kids and first flights.
  • Don't claim more than the certificate is. Avoid words like "accredited", "licensed" or "certified" unless your organization really holds that status.
  • Add the date and a real signature. A handwritten signature means more than a printed one.

Questions people ask

What do you write on a certificate?

A title, a presentation line ("presented to"), the recipient's name, the reason for the award, and the date and signatures. The examples above show each part for different occasions.

How long should certificate wording be?

Usually 15–40 words under the name. Formal certificates, such as ordinations, can be longer; awards for kids should be short.

Can I change the wording on your templates?

Yes. Every line of text on our templates is editable in the browser, and you see the finished certificate before you decide to download.
